wildlights of the desert

Gorgeous weather, wonderful day! I spent the morning sewing and quilting, with Donald running around at Home Depot and looking for the cheapest diesel.  In the afternoon, we stopped by Ken and Karen's RV, picked them up and off to the Living Desert to see the WildNights Lights exhibit that is put on every December for a number of nights.  It is over this weekend, so we didn't want to miss it, as we did last year with myself enjoying a bought of the flu.

The one acre model train display is a hit, and you can easily spend over an hour just looking at all the details and the multiple trains running. Then you can come back again, and see all the details you missed - like this little bit of humour!

When we were there last year, the enclosure for a Jaguar exhibit was under construction, and we were very pleased to catch a look at this awesome cat, and hear him cough! LOUD! Donald and I thought he was trying to bring up a hairball - we know that sound, even it is so much quieter with our little cat.
I like the walk in aviary, where there are benches and if you sit quietly, the birds are all around you, like this beauty above.  We left the park about 5 and tootled off for some mexican food for dinner, then headed back to enjoy the light show. AWESOME~~~~~~~  What a truly wonderful place for a family to go during the holidays. About half the park was in lights, including blue floodlights illuminating the big rock mountain where the Bighorn Sheep hang out.  The way the blue lights were done, with blue/white ones on the trees nearby, it looked like snow covered rocks and hoar frosted trees. Cool!

In the amphitheatre was a "Grinch" show, with hedgehogs, baby tortoises, and of course, Max the dog. A live band played in another area, with about 10 of these firepits to warm up with cocoa, marshmallows, hotdogs, macaroni and cheese... all great things to enjoy as a family.  Ken really enjoyed the song " Blue eyed Tiger" the band played, hmm?

Holiday times are food times....

A belated Merry holidays to everyone.  The day before Christmas, we were delighted to join Ken and Karen and visit a Thai/Vietnamese restaurant that they had previously been to.  Let me tell you, it was the best place ever!  Very small, tucked away behind a mall with a french name.  We ordered 4 Money Bags to start with ( mmm ) then each of us ordered a dish, which we all shared. Hot and sour soup, in an authentic server... a red curry..a salad noodle dish with BBQ pork..and pad thai. Everyone was too full for dessert, but Donald thought he would order Vietnamese coffee, which he did, and then the owner showed him how to prepare it at the table. I forgot to take pictures, but we all had a sip, and we will all be forever ruined to have iced coffee/latte/whatever anywhere else. None compare to this coffee, it was awesome.

Christmas day I did laundry early in the morning ( yes, I was the only one there and yoo hoo - lots of machines to use! ) then we were invited to join friends Allen and Linda, daughter A and her friend D for an actual sit at the table meal in their 5th wheel.  I cooked the turkey breast, gravy, made a salad, mashed and sweet potatoes. Linda provided early afternoon appetizers and the rest. Fun. We ended with a good game of Trivial Pursuit.

We have to say thanks again to Allen and Lolita for the gift of tamales.  They recommended a nearby grocery store in Cathedral City that has 'pretty good' tamales.  We went there today, and it was a huge great store where I picked up some cactus leaves, tomatillo sauce, cheese and chicken tamales and jicama.  Next time I hope to remember to take my wee Latino cookbook, or at least a proper list.

And no, the tamales do not compare to Lolita's. We have been spoiled now with tamales and iced coffee. 

Ok, enough with the food talk. Quilting tomorrow, and maybe Donald will have to rescue Rick from the shopping ladies.

Rubys and Rabbits

Catching up and enjoying bright sunshine is wonderful, as we joined Rick, Paulette, John and Judy at Ruby's in downtown Palm Springs for a lovely brunch.  Their breakfast menu is better than the lunch and dinner, or is it we would rather do a breakfast menu than the other? In any case, it was loads of fun - except that every 10 minutes or so there is a little bell sound that comes out of the outdoor speakers.  Yes, we were sitting outside on the patio.  What follows is a terrible bird screeching sound at around volume 8 out of 10.  This apparently is supposed to frighten off the local pigeons and other species.  So, we stop talking when that goes on!  Paulette noticed that there were about 6 pigeons right underneath the speakers chowing down on the leftovers in a bus persons tray on a cart, so I guess the warning screeches may not work all that well.  Rick came down with the flu right afterwards ( he could feel it coming on before brunch ), and we all noticed he didn't eat the beans of his breakfast burrito combo.  Who knows = that may have been the cure for his flu! Sorry, Rick, we hope you feel better soon!

It seems everywhere we visit, especially family, there are lots of rabbits about.  South Edmonton has huge hares/jackalopes. Our boys seem to think that they were experiments from the local University of Alberta.  Victoria had a big to-do recently with the environmentalists over what to do with their overly abundant population.  No rabbits in the big white north - coyotes would take care of them.  This year at the Sands, they are everywhere.  We never saw one last year.  At night we are very careful driving into the RV Park, lest we run one over as they enjoy the green grass on the palm lined boulevard through the park.  These ones are a fifth of the size of the Edmonton creatures, so pretty darn cute.

Today's plan is to join friends Ken and Karen, also from the Shuswap, for a quick run into Joanne's, then we hope to do a Thai restaurant lunch, then back to the pool/hot tubs with plastic wine glasses and refreshments.  mmm mmm.

The sun is coming up and the weather is finally warming up a bit more here .... but I can't sing 'it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas', however the Park does look festive at night with the lights, ours included!

Finally a posting, and you would think we were busy, but not really!  First of all a big THANK YOU to Allen and Lolita for dropping off some real tamales, yes, real homemade by Lolita - mmmm...... A lovely gift from fellow bloggers.

The days seem to go by here at the Sands,and we have been joined by some great friends from the great white north, Allen and Linda, who are staying for 3 months.  Yesterday, we enjoyed a day together at the COD ( College of the Desert ) Street Fair, and then lunch at Ruby's and a walk about downtown Palm Springs.

No matter where we seem to be, there are visits to Home Depot - hmm - how are we at a home building store when we are not at home? Donald is being very creative and building me a wooden box to hold my sewing machine - this is then put on a pull cart so I can pull it easily to quilting on Wednesdays! It is a Janome 6600, and very heavy.

Ah yes, the other place we went was to Shields Date Farm in Indio.  I thought perhaps there would be tours in the date fields, but alas, there was a poorly done video in a run down room, an extremely touristy tacky gift shop and dates for sale that were twice as much and staler than the farmers who sell at the COD Street Fair. We did learn from the video that it takes the trees almost 15 - 20 years to produce after being planted.  That may be longer than a vineyard - have to ask Allen and Linda, who after their tour at the Robert Mondavi vineyards in the Napa valley are now our 'go-to' for wine questions.  BTW, they said that was a great tour!

Even though we thought that it might be cold walking around downtown Palm Springs at night, we went to last Thursday's Street Fest and really enjoyed ourselves.  It was quite warm and the street looks so festive at night. So, we'll have to decide if we want to do that again this Thursday, or go to the dance at the RV Park.

Another dull weather day, so Kim headed off early in the morning with Karen and Paulette to Joanne's, the 99 cent store and Kohl's.  She wasn't the buyer again! Do you think she has had enough of shopping?

We had a request from Allen and Lolita for the Slow Cooker recipe: Slow Cooker Lemon and Olive Chicken
2 carrots, 2 ribs celery, 1 bulb fennel, 1 onion - all chopped, thrown in the pot
16 large stuffed green olives ( I used the large feta stuffed olives I bought at the Olive Pit in Corning!)
4 -5 cloves garlic, chopped,crushed
2 bay leaves
1 tsp Oregano, some salt and pepper
12 boneless chicken thighs
3/4 c. sodium-reduced chicken broth, 3/4 c. water
Throw all this in the slow cooker, chicken on top. Cook as best directed with your slow cooker.
Just before serving, take 1 c. of the liquid out, whisk with 1/4 c. flour, add back to pot with 2 TB lemon juice, 1/2 c. chopped parsley and the grated zest of a lemon.

 You can serve it also with a mix of chopped parsley and lemon zest sprinkled on top of your guests' helping.  Serve over rice.  MMMM!

Donald said no thanks to leftovers for supper, so we went out for supper to a local Pizza joint with Ken and Karen. Fun!

Arrivals at the Sands

After the 5th wheel landing jacks were finished and repaired yesterday, the weather sure looked glum, so we took a chance that the laundry room would not be over run with other people thinking the same thing - and lo and behold it wasn't!  So, five loads later and we're good to go for another couple of weeks.  At some point it will be hard to go back to doing one load at a time when we come off the road, as it sure is nice to throw in 5 loads at once and be done in just over an hour.

In the meantime, it started to pour rain and that is when Al and Linda showed up with their Titanium, new to them this year. They started down from northern B.C. early in November and had great weather till they hit the Sands! As we shared our dinner menu of Slow Cooker Lemon Chicken with olives, they told us of their past week or so in the Napa Valley, touring the country, wineries and lunch at the CIA.
We will have to save our pennies...dollars.... gold coins so that we can do that someday as well.

Congrats to the Seahawks of course. Took you a while to get going, boys!

La Quinta Farmers Market

There is some upcoming unpleasant weather, so we headed off Sunday morning to the La Quinta Farmers Market, in " Old Town".  It isn't very old, just made to look old.  A very enjoyable market with about 25 booths and a nice coffee shop. Yep, that is all we bought - a cup of coffee.

 On the way back, we took Highway 111 all the way to Palm Springs, and I suggested we stop for lunch at Shermans' Deli.  We had heard some great reports on this place from Rick and Paulette and a number of the quilting ladies.  Sure enough, all reports were correct and we enjoyed great corned beef sandwiches.  We also liked the fact that there are water bowls for dogs and baskets of dog biscuits for those patrons bringing along their furry pals.

Donald looked everywhere on the satellite TV guide for the Seahawks playing time on Sunday and guess what? They play Monday Night football tonight - whoo hoo! Go Hawks!

Guess what else happened this morning? The landing jacks were fixed!  Big WHOO HOO!!!! Thanks ever so much to Mario Sanchez of Palm Drive RV Service.  Great guy, great service.

So, we are re-levelled and finally able to feel settled here.  In the crockpot: Slow Cooker Lemon and Olive Chicken. Hope it is good, as it is supper for ourselves and Allen and Linda, who are due to arrive today ( I hope - or else I made this big pot for 2 only ! )

Temecula was busy

The sunny warmer weather is back upon us, and we love it.  Yesterday, Kim went off with the quilting ladies of the park to Temecula, a very quaint old type town southwest of here.  There is a large quilt shop there and they visited a couple of others, using up the whole day as they didn't get home till dark.  There were bargains to be had, but she came home with very little.  Seven ladies in a van talking quilting. All day. A person would go crazy.

She did manage to pick up a brochure of Temecula, and that will be added to the list of places to perhaps visit when the gang gets here in January.

We have heard from our friend, Bob, whom we spent time with last winter boon docking around Arizona. He stopped at Lake Mead and we forgot to ask how high the lake level came up this summer.  While we we there last spring, it was in the newspaper that the lake levels were going to rise as high as 22 more feet, and large equipment was cleaning the beaches in preparation for this.

One of the advantages of being in a more populated area like Palm Springs is that a major airport is close by in case you need to go off quickly in  family emergencies.  Boon docking in the desert or travelling into Mexico, does not necessarily lend itself to this.  So, for the present time, even though we would like to be in the desert, we are happy to be here.  It also means friends and family can easily get here, as well, and we're looking forward to Al and Linda arriving on Monday - hey guys - supper will be ready!

Cold desert nights

Yes, you are seeing icicles on the Oleander bushes!  This was about 8 a.m. this morning, the result of the sprinkler system watering in the night.  Yep, the furnace was on in the 5th wheel.

Last December we had a couple of cold nights, waking up to frost on the roofs of the park models, so we think this is not unusual for December.

Quilting day for Kim - pictures of that at Paulette's blog. Donald decided to invite Rick along for his to do list of the day - getting the wheels of the truck re-torqued after their rotation, looking for the Wednesday Farmers Market in Palm Desert, and then going out for lunch in Palm Springs.  He should  have had the camera with him as they went hunting for one more place to go.  Rick has sworn by this product, called The Solution , for waterless washing of RV rigs.  He found that it also does an excellent job on computer screens, windows and eyeglasses as well!  Rick had received email from fellow blogger Betty, that this product was in fact manufactured a few miles from here, so off they went!  After finding a non-descript building in an industrial area, sure enough that was the place.  They got the tour, and Don purchased a gallon and a squirt bottle to apply it.  The fellow even threw in the special rag to use.  Well, you better read Rick's blog, as he of course had a camera with him.  I think it was an enjoyable day for both of them and the dogs.

Happy Hour beckoned us at 4:00, so off we went, but not before Donald opened a box that the UPS man dropped off during the day.  He had ordered a new ladder from Camping World, one that is tall, yet folds up to the size of a 2x4.  Just in time to be cleaning with his new squirt bottle and Solution!

Late at night, a big 5th wheel, a Big Country, pulled in across the street from us.  It is so hard to park in the dark, as none of the sites here are large pull throughs.  It looks like they just parked temporarily, and then will set up in the daylight.

Festival fun, dinner fun

Missed a couple of days in posting  - hmmm. No excuse. Sorry about that.  Sunday we were off to the Tamale Festival in Indio, and we had a great time.  The wind had died down, so it was much more pleasant and an early arrival time enabled us to park very close to one of the gateways into the festival.  It also allowed to walk around without the big crowds and have a good look at the booths.  The final decision as to where to try a Tamale was at the Apostolic Church group booth.  It looked very clean, well run and was a fund raiser for their church. Of course, a big attraction was the huge trophy displayed, letting us know that they won first place for beef tamales. VERY good tamales!  With so many tamale boots ( over 120?) this is probably a big honour.   We noticed in Rick's blog, that Grandma Lupe's booth had huge lineups - well, we walked by and sure enough the lineups were incredibly long, already at the early hour.  No trophies to display.  So, Donald walked up to someone in line and asked why they were lining up for this particular booth. " We heard it was pretty good, and saw the lineups, so it must be good. ", then one of the fellows said" And as soon as the people in front of us jump off the cliff, we'll be right behind them!"  That got a few laughs. No, we didn't stand in line. 

Jeep had a large display, with vehicles that you can test drive over an off-wheel course they built, and a large Salsa Dance-Off Stage that that were sponsoring.

Yesterday, Monday, the wind came up again so we went for a few staples at Vons ( Safeway ) a few blocks over, then to the post office for stamps and to mail parcels.  Great staff at the post office, I always enjoy going there.

Before lunch we went for a walk to check out the park model that Don's family has rented for the month of January, and on our way back we met Rick and invited them over for dinner.  As this post is getting long enough, check out their blog for the carrying - on's! Thanks to Paulette for bringing dessert that was (almost) on the WW plan!

Landing gear saga: email from Jayco today, sort of a brush-off and they just said get it welded ( yeah, duh!)So, Donald promptly called them and they are now looking at it again. He also gave a call to Mario of Palm Drive RV to update him on the email and call.

I have a class this afternoon at the clubhouse about T shirts, and Donald is hanging onto the  US tracphone waiting for calls.

Oh yes, there was a booth at the festival by Healthy California, and they were giving away free cookbooks.  So, I accepted " Healthy Latino Recipes, Made with Love".  There are recipes inside using Tomatillos and Cactus leaves.... I think we need to try these!  There is a Carneceria(?) close by where I can purchase all sorts of things.  I will take my cookbook with me.

Landing gear problem diagnosed

We didn't expect the mobile RV technicians back today, but sure enough, they came shortly after lunchtime, even though they are very busy.  They cut a couple of bolts, took a bolt out of the drive shaft, and the leg dropped out the bottom.  It was very tough to get at.  Whenever these things happen to you, the is some second-guessing going on - what did we miss setting up the rig? what errors did we do? In fact I felt it was all my fault because I had the Park maintenance gravel and fix the lot and this happened just afterward.  So, turns out we did everything correctly.  Look at the picture - both sides of the plate is to be welded on the leg.  The one side is welded properly, and the right side weld did not penetrate, and therefore is inappropriate.  The one side broke, trying to hold or do the job all by itself.

We were very lucky that it didn't happen in the night, or at some other time.  We were lucky that we were right there to get boards underneath, that there was not huge damage when it dropped ( however, there may be some when they have to put a new one in ) and we were able to back the truck ever so carefully and hookup again, to take the weight and stop it from leaning one way and twisting the rig.

An email with pictures has been sent to Jayco's service department and we shall see on Monday what they say back.

What else happened today? The Howler continues but we see it is everywhere in the southwest. A shopping trip in the morning for a birthday present, college football in the afternoon, we watched the roadrunners run around the rig, and I have just about finished machine quilting a Christmas quilt. Pulled BBQ beef in the crockpot. Mmmm. Tomorrow: Tamale Festival?

Get out! We're going sideways!!!!!!

The plan for the day was to do some laundry and run over to Kohl's for a bit.  Well, you know the saying about planning...... An early morning visit from the Office Administrator here and the Head Grounds Person led to a complete landscaping of our site.  There was broken glass all mixed in with old lava type rock, a hole in the back of the lot, and Oleanders that were 12 feet tall.  So, we had to pull the 5th out of there, move it to the site next door and it took them the better part of the day to trim the hedges, pull out the dead ones, and move in a huge amount of gravel, spread all over.  It looks lovely.

I headed off with Paulette to Yucca Valley to a couple of quilt stores, and Donald stayed back to do up some laundry ( WHAT a sweetheart ).  By the time we got back around 2 pm, the 5th had been moved back in place to the lot, and Don had put down the landing gear, the back jacks, pulled the truck away, levelled it all up and put out the flowers and patio mats. Oh, he also had the water and sewer hooked up.  So, time to push the button and move out the slides.

TROUBLE!!!!!!!!  The rig made a crunching sound, and started to move/topple over to the door side. OMG.  ADRENALIN RUSH!  Don knew it wasn't good.  The front jack on the passenger side had started to collapse. ( Yes, it was done right in set up ). He is a smart guy: he gradually loaded boards to take the weight, managed to hook up the truck again ( whew, thank...) to take more weight off and correct the lean. He also got the jack out of the truck and used it as well under that edge.  I started making phone calls to the mobile RV guys listed on the RV Park map advertisements.  The second call resulted in a couple of guys coming within 10 minutes!!! Thank you Palm Drive RV and Auto Center.   The fellow said he came quickly, as he could hear it in our voices that things were not good!

So, first they had a quick looky-see, then got another bigger 4 Ton bottle jack and put it under, and moved the boards Don had piled under to a better position.  We could now unhook the truck and be safe.

The guys then started a longer look at what's up.  We have to make a phone call to Jayco on Monday, then obviously the work has to start.  Something in the landing gear broke ( the stop?) and whether is is due to inappropriate initial welds, or fatigue, is still unknown at this time.  The 5th is a 2010 5th.  In other words, pretty new.

Of course, the RV tech took some more pictures, and since it was the end of the day on Friday, he didn't want to start ripping things apart, which we agreed.   More on the story as we go..... good thing we are here for some time, 'cause we ain't able to go anywhere!!!!

 I met Paulette walking the mutts when I took the garbage to the bin, she had to come have a look, and sure enough Rick was over pretty fast after that!  You know, I kind of let it be known in this blog about their Ryley mutt stealing a steak, so if he wants to write about this, go for it!!!!! 

We better end the day watching An Idiot Abroad for a few laughs. 

Sir, STEP AWAY from THAT Truck.

Wednesday's is quilting day for Kim, and Don made it over to the GM dealer in Palm Springs for his appointment to have the oil changed on the truck and the tires rotated.  He had our mechanic son change the fuel filter in Victoria prior to our leaving.  As he had time to wait for the work to be done, he starting looking around the lot at vehicles - oh no! He found a 2007 1/2, 38K miles, leather interior, full load, sunroof, dvd, chipped, lift kit, new tires and wheels, back up sensors, duramax, crewcab and pretty much anything you can get as an option on it.  I think he was drooling. Of course, the shark salesperson pounced and offered all kinds of help to sell to a Canadian.  No doubt our son will read this, and be emailing about 'how much?'. No, we do not need a new truck.

 I was busy in the north clubhouse finishing some Christmas wall hangings and visiting and learning with the ladies.  We all must have been ready to quit early this week, as we have the building till 4 pm, and we were all leaving by 3:10.  So, since we had time to organize ourselves, I asked Donald if he wanted to go to Happy Hour at the main clubhouse for 4 pm.  Yep!  Last year we went a couple of times and there wasn't many participants, but this year - whoa! Lots of people, lots of great snacks and conversation.  Our dinner meat was still frozen, so we opted to try out the local Thai restaurant for dinner afterward.  It was o.k., but we have had Thai food a number of times, and I quite often will cook KungPao, and we both felt this place had dialled down the food to meet western tastes, as it was not spicy or hot and not near the freshness of the vegetables.  There is another Thai place in Palm Springs that we might try.

The HOWLER started just after got back to the rig, and we picked up a few things, and continued to get up out of bed and pick up more as the wind got stronger.  We are still rocking and rolling as I type at 11:00 am.  I thought we might go to W*mart to print off pictures from the camera to send to the GG's in Ontario, but the sand has kicked up and we cannot see Mt. Jacinto, so likely the roads will be blowing sand.  Better that than snow. Hmmm sand/snow. Both 4 letter words.  You choose your favorite.

Oscar and Bella come to visit

Somehow I missed a day posting here, not that we're crazy busy.  Monday we headed off to the local GM dealer in Palm Springs, as Donald wanted to make an appointment for tire rotation and maybe an oil change on Wednesday.  Wednesday of course, is quilting day.  That done, we headed off to Rancho Mirage and a stop in Costco.  We noticed the black smoke coming from an RV Park, feeling bad for whoever it was that was going through the tragedy, and hoping no one was hurt. 

Yesterday, I really cleaned and rearranged furniture inside the 5th wheel, and Donald tackled washing the roof and the front of the outside.  Looking uptown!  I needed a better space for my sewing machine other than the kitchen table, and we picked up a small portable table at Costco that fits in the corner of a slide just tickety-boo.  After Rick and Paulette went on their uphill morning hike, she picked me up for another trip to Joanne's.  This time, no lineups but the good sales were still on!

The highlight of yesterday was a quick visit from friends, Rick and Lynda, from our northern BC hometown.  Rick also retired from the RR.  They were on their way to Mexico and would have loved to stay here, but the Sands does not accept truck campers, even though theirs is pretty deluxe! 

It had been a long time since we had seen their dogs, Bella and Oscar, so of course they had to have their picture taken!  The last time we were camping/glamping together was about 5 years ago at the Crabfest in Gingolx, B.C. ( waaayyyyy north, near Alaska, on the coast ).

The end of the day was a great video call to our kids on the Island, and some online chat to our youngest son. Congrats for lining up school in February, N!

Busy Sunday

College of the Desert has a street fair in their parking lot every Saturday and Sunday with over 150 vendors, music and foods.  It is great fun.  An early start to the day had us leaving the Sands at 8:45 and we really enjoyed it. Just ahead of us pulling into the parking lot were Rick, Paulette, Allen and Lolita, and the furgirls.  We said our goodbyes to Allen and Lolita there, as they were heading back to work ( yuck! ) in the next day or so.

So good!  After BF shopping on Friday, I had a $45 certificate from Kohl's, so we headed there to spend it, this time on something that perhaps Donald needed. He rarely buys clothes for himself, sticking to the usual (many!) years T shorts, shorts, and sweatshirts.  Of course, I didn't read the small print that the certificate wasn't good till tomorrow, but the sales were still on and he picked up a couple of shirts. The exciting part was when he was outside the doors of Kohls, waiting for me as I paid at the till just inside.  Sirens!  Emergency vehicles pulled right up to the door, and proceeded to get a stretcher ready to enter the store.  Donald mentioned to the Paramedic that the stretcher delivery gave new meaning to the phrase" Shop till you drop".  That gave some chuckles to the emergency crew.

If that wasn't enough excitement, we came home and washed the outside of the 5'er.  Lots of comments from neighbours about how we should come do their rigs after we were finished.  Hmmph. We are VERY expensive! Our timing was perfect, as we finished the big wash just as they were announcing the referee's for the Grey Cup.

 Later, just after the big game ( whoo hoo B.C.! ) I went to do laps in the pool and then the hot tub, as Donald drove to Valero to see how much their propane fill was ( $28 for a 30lb tank, I don't think so! ).

a planned quiet day turned into new friends and an invite

After Black Friday shopping, we thought Saturday was going to be quiet and just a 'hang around the rv' day.  Donald spied some nice looking outdoor plants at Lowe's on his galavanting Friday, so we made a trip to see if we could brighten up our patio area. The prices for plants were the same as at home, so I nixed that, and he suggested Home Depot since it was close by.  We picked up two lovely little mixed planters there, and a fellow shopper commented on how lovely they were, but too bad they were in a short planter. Why? Well, the rabbits will eat them all up pretty fast.  So, they are now at home, on the patio, up on top of upside down plastic milk crates.  We use those milk crates to transport our 30lb propane bottles in the back of the truck when they need refilling.

When we ran by Rick and Paulettes to drop off her casserole dish, Don heard someone yell out his name. Oh boy, he thought... I should know this guy.  Well, they hadn't met, but it was Allen from Corona, Cal., who has commented on our blog and the solver of the rice question at the border. He then graciously invited us to dinner that evening at their spot, joining R and P and Russ. What a dinner it was. Lolita is an amazing cook. I would post about it, but you can look at  Rick and Paulette's.

This morning we are schedule for a quick chat on Skype with our kids in Victoria, then off to College of the Desert for the street fair there.  I think Donald hears the Greek food booth calling his name.

First experience of Black Friday

Well, the invitation was there from Paulette and Karen, for me to join them to experience Black Friday.  I am not a shopper, except when I have to for supplies and staples.  Just a minute, I correct that.  Quilt stores are different. Then I can spend and hour or more in a small wee shop. Usually buying little.

Today?  Bargoons to be had! No way for the midnight kerfuffel, that would be for the true BF shoppers, but we did start at 6 am. In the dark! First stop: Joanne's for fabrics. See paragraph 1: aka: quilt store. Mucho bargoono. There were 7 staff cutting fabrics, and we knew there were 50 people waiting all the time to have their fabrics cut to their desired lengths, because they have a pull ticket system with numbers like in Lee Valley Tools.  In the door we went, the other two gals headed off in one direction and I bee lined it to the number ticket dispenser. I KNEW! Then I went shopping for fabrics. We all bought a roller bag for your sewing machine, and a Rowenta iron. Not only a great sale, but we had coupons for additional 25 - 50% off!  Then to Kohl's for awesome sale items, and again, we had coupons for another 15% off! Who hoo!  Macy's: not much on sale.

Donald says he didn't do too much. Checked on and topped up the rig's batteries. He went over to Costco and Walmart for coffee grounds. He was glad that the didn't have to go on BF shopping. Says he now has to look for a part time job for the bargoons.

Yesterday afternoon's American Thanksgiving fest was indeed a feast. To think we even had the energy to go back to the main hall for the dance later in the evening. Thanks Rick for the pictures of dinner, because we couldn't find the camera. It was found later .. in my purse... typical of me. Mentalpause.

Well, the temps are heading for the 80's.. so some outside activities are calling. Main Hall , 7 am tomorrow for coffee and muffins, followed at 8 am by a monster garage sale at the park.  I suggested College of the Desert street fair for Sunday.

Tonight we are watching Idiot Abroad on Discovery Channel. Funniest thing we have seen for a long time.

Quilting and Skype

Wednesday is the day for any interested quilters to bring along their projects, sewing machines and lunch and spend the day together in the North Hall.  Kim was ready a day early with about 4 projects on the go, and since the hall is only about 20 yards away, it was easy to lug everything over.  Fun day.

Donald, however, had on his list to go to W*mart for some items, and was totally blown away by the crowds there, shopping for Thanksgiving dinners.  The truck, though, looks shiny and pretty as he visited a detailing shop in Palm Desert that he found when he dropped Kim off at Monica's Quilt Shop.

In the evening, we had a 'date' with our kids in Victoria on Skype.  The RV park has internet, but it doesn't work very well with Skype, so we use our Verizon Mifi.  We have a plan with 5G a month, so we will have to keep track of the usuage, as Skype apparently can scarf that up pretty quick. The kids managed to find a wee little sitting chair that our little new grandson can sit in, while he 'talks' to his grandparents! It was pretty wonderful, and we are very grateful for the technology to see him as he grows this winter. ( and his parents and the dogs! )

Speaking of dogs, we really miss going to the dog park here.  No, we don't want another dog at the present time.  Ok, todays agenda:  see if Safeway is open to get some more salad ingredients, go to the Thanksgiving Dinner at 2:30 ( why, why at 2:30?? ) then maybe the Dance this evening.  We might also start cutting the 11 foot Oleander hedge, as we have been waiting 5 days now for the park crew to show up, and we have our 'lopper' with us.

A lovely welcome back BBQ

What a feast!  Rick and Paulette were so gracious and kind to invite us over for a BBQ this evening, for our first real night back at the Sands RV and Golf Resort.  It is so much fun to meet new people that you have " RV blogged" with over the past couple of years, and so this evening we met a wonderful couple, Russ and Donna from Oregon who write " Travels in Therapy ".  As everyone always says it is a small world, we also met Ken and Karen.  They live only 7 km away from us in Scotch Creek, BC in the Shuswap area.  Even though we were not meant to meet Ken and Karen till the BBQ in the evening, we actually met first thing in the morning at the laundry room!  So, by supper it was like meeting old friends - ha! They had been going to Mexico for the past 7 winters, so we had lots of questions about their trips there.  If you take a look at Rick's blog, you can catch some pictures of the BBQ. I had my camera with me, but forgot it was in my bag with all the conversations.  Speaking of conversations, the topics varied from RV/truck stuff and quilting stuff. Guess which one of us was interested in what!

Paulette and Karen have talked Kim into going to Black Friday shopping. Since she is not a shopper, she'll be encouraging those 2 ladies what to buy. Well, except when they get to Joanne's for fabrics. O my.

We haven't fully set up our little site here, as the work crew is supposed to come and cut some of the Oleander again - in the back it is 11 feet high, and very messy. We are not very happy with that, however, in all fairness, we came earlier than expected.  The rig will get hooked back up today and moved over a couple of feet, as we cannot get the truck in easily to the lot.

You would think we would come here to relax. Yeah, right. The schedule has started, with the BBQ last night, running around today, quilting tomorrow, Thanksgiving dinner at the clubhouse Thursday, BF shopping on Friday...... whew.

Thanks again, Rick and Paulette. Fantastic evening. Fantastic meal. Fantastic company. Ok: Rick didn't say anything in his blog about Ryley. She thought she would have some steak as well. As Rick came into their 5th wheel, up the stairs with a plate full of steaks, Ryley helped herself to one off the plate. So, entertainment was added to the evening as well.

looking for Sun at the Sands

So sorry! We brought the rain with us as we arrived here yesterday in Desert Hot Springs and the Sands RV and Golf Resort.  We are still busy setting up our site, as we will be here almost 3 months, but maybe later today we will meet up with fellow park guests and old friends. 

There were some high winds to drive through yesterday on 395, but since it was Sunday, the I -10 and travelling through San Bernardino and Redlands was probably a lot quieter than midweek.  It did get to 3C on the Tehachapi Pass summit! 

Ah! A beautiful morning with sun! This is what we came for! The to - do list is long, but now we can relax and enjoy. 

too long a travel day for us....

We always seemed to be chased by wind and the weather and this trip down south is no different.  In Corning, where we spent the night last night, it was calling for 1.5 inches of snow by Saturday.  The morning skies were black-ish, and we left Rolling Feathers at 7:09 am, in very strong winds.  Luckily, we managed to stay just ahead of this storm cell so that the winds were calmer for the rest of the day.  A looooonnng day.

The smell of the orange trees are now wafting about us, and we'll rest it out here in Orange Grove RV, Bakersfield, for a couple of days. Perhaps even three. Accuweather was reporting snow for the Tehachapi Pass tomorrow.

An interesting thing today: our GPS re-routed us from the Bakersfield exit on I 5, to the Stockton Highway exit, also to Bakersfield.  She did it at the last minute.  It was not that much farther, only about 4 miles down the I 5, and took us to the south end of the city.  Apparently, she knows when rush hour traffic is, or how busy, and re- routes us.  Now, anyone else may think, of course the GPS does that.  In Northern B.C., we don't have rush hour, or even that much traffic, so hence this was new to us.  Well, we do have rush MINUTE. That means there is a line up of 6 vehicles at the stop light. ( near Tim Horton's ). Now you know why we dread driving into Los Angeles.

Did the Siskiyou just in time

Our early start from  7 Feathers in Oregon paid off with an easy drive, with sunny spots along the way. That was a wonderful surprise! The last two mornings we have left at 7:09 am and 7:32 am, which are records for us! There was a little bit of wind in Weed, and also when we arrived at Rolling Hills.  We tried the buffet dinner, and it was fabulous.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, it is the Senior's half price deal, so we both had an amazing meal for the total of $15.95, everything included. I was even able to get in on the senior's deal, as the age cut off was 50! Whoo hoo!

The other stop we made along the way was to the Olive Pit in Corning, just before we parked the rig.  There was plenty of RV Parking in their back parking lot, and we choose 2 bottles of olives: some Kalamata and Feta stuffed olives. Both of these should go very well with greek salad. A little agricultural education never hurts, so we learned that the small, bush like olive trees are for mechanical harvesting.  Along the I 5, you could see these massive fields of bush olives.  The mechanical harvesters pick olives that are used for oil only. The larger trees are still picked by hand, and these are the olives that are sold as whole olives.  Today, we look forward to seeing almonds and fruit perhaps.

Looking at the maps last night, we could not decide which way to go.  The weather of course, has turned very cool, rainy and in some spots very windy.  It looks like this right through till next weekend.  So glad we made it over the Siskiyou before this big storm rolls in.  Last year we travelled down the I 5 and overnighted at Santa Nella RV Park ( not recommended ) then continued to Bakersfield, with a big round trip through the Mohave Desert.  We thought we may try Highway 99, which might be slower to Bakersfield, but we have the time.

In the rain in Oregon

Last evening we stayed in the parking lot at W*mart in Chehalis, Washington, along with about 15 other rigs.  It was fairly quiet, and we stocked up there with groceries to last us a few more days.  No, I didn't buy rice!  Speaking of which, thanks to Allen and Lolita, the mystery with the rice question at the border is somewhat solved!  Thanks! Effective July 30, 2011, you must declare your rice, or be subject to fines due to possible importation of the Khapra Beetle. Interesting!

Tonight we are at 7 Feathers in Oregon, and planning to hit the road very early in the morning to tackle the Pass.  The weather reports are informing us that things are going to turn for the worse, with snow and storms come Friday. Rain tomorrow.

Well, off to the Casino for a looky - see and maybe the buffet. 

Chehalis Chores

We took the Black Ball ferry this morning from Victoria, crossing the Hood Canal bridge and we also tried the Toll Bridge. This time is was a sunny driver, versus the rainy one we had last winter.  Of course, the sunny day means it is cold at night! Ah, always a trade - off. 

The border crossing went well, with the normal question of whether we had fruits or vegetables or firewood ( no ), and this year we had a new question: do you have rice? Nope. : "Are you sure?" Yes, we are. NO rice. I knew this because I cooked up the last of it at our kids house a few days ago. So, a stop at Walmart in Chehalis to stock up. We might buy rice. (ha)

The maps are out and we are planning which way we will go after Corning, California.  There may have to be an extended stay in Bakersfield, because two of the 5th wheel brakes are not working. Hmmmpf. I told Donald we had to call Orange Grove ahead of time and book, because Rick and Paulette just about didn't get in without a reservation.

Christening and the Family all together

This was the first time that our two sons, our daughter in law and ourselves have been together since the wedding in September 2009.  We hope to get together more often than just when there is a special occasion!  Life seems so busy and everyone going all directions, including ourselves.

The service at Centennial United Church was lovely.  This is a very old church in Victoria, with a gigantic pipe organ.  At the end of the service the organist played a postlude. The piece was " Noel #10 by Louis Claude Daquin, and the pipes were resounding! Our wee little grandson was very good during his Baptism, and slept afterwards till the pipes woke him up. However, he was all smiles for those congregants who spoke to us during fellowship time after the service.

Last evening we had our Christmas dinner with our children, even if it was just Salisbury steak, veggies and cookies for dessert!   For the rest of today, we will be watching the Seahawks play, picking up and cleaning the 5th, and getting ready to check out of the Rv Resort on Tuesday.  We are ready to get out of this rain.

Busy RV Park

We had our first babysitting adventure, night before last, with our new grandson.  He is growing like a weed and gaining lots of weight.  His mum and dad enjoyed a couple of hours out with friends, which is a good break for them.  We told them to take advantage of our offer while we were still here!

Oceanside RV Resort, where we are staying, has been very busy and almost full every night. Don has been out visiting with neighbouring RV'ers, and most are taking the Washington State Ferry to Anacortes, and then south.  There is a recreational vehicle 'promotion' on the ferry, and the cost is half of the ride on the Black Ball Ferry to Port Angeles.  We looked at that, but it gets into Anacortes late in the day, so most rigs overnight in Anacortes and start south the next day, driving through or around Seattle. Seems that the costs are now evened out between the two ferries, so we will be sticking with the Black Ball Ferry for now ( and avoiding Seattle driving ).

We haven't heard back from Jayco on our warranty issue.  We will follow up later this week, as we try to accomplish most of the other items on our list, prior to leaving after next weekend.

Definitely looking forward to warmer weather as we dislike having to scrape the ice off the windshield of the truck in the morning. Maybe we leave too early in the morning to do stuff.  I know, relax, relax.

5th Repairs

One the way to the Island, Donald noticed that he was not getting much in the way of trailer brakes.  We pulled over to the side of the road, and sure enough, only one wheel was warm.  So, he was very very careful travelling over the Coquihalla pass, using the truck and gearing down and was quite successful.  That is not the way we want to travel all the way south, though.

We stopped in at a local RV dealer here in Sidney, and they would not be able to fit us in for a week, so we waited, and now the 5th spent the day there yesterday and probably all day today as well.  Yesterday, they checked the passenger side wheels, and a bearing seal was blown, contaminating the brakes with grease. The fix for that was cleaning the brake drum and replacing the brake assembly and repacking the bearings.  Can you say " ca-ching $$"?  Today, they are checking the remaining three wheels and repacking the bearings in them.  Then we will be checking to see if they work, and also following up with Jayco and Dexter to see if they are willing to pay anything towards the cost under warranty. Our unit is still within its' 2 year warranty period.   The other item they fixed yesterday was fixing the hot water tank electrical switch ( the one inside the unit, on the wall ).  That should also be a warranty item. Not looking forward to arguing about these things. 

Checking out 50+ Feet Parking Spots

The reason for our extended stay here in the Victoria area is to visit with our son, DIL and their new baby.  There is also his Baptism or Christening on November 13th, which we are looking forward to and after that we will be free to travel south.  Yesterday we went shopping for an outfit for his Christening and luckily obtained one small enough - he is now 10 lbs but still seems so tiny in our arms.

The Black Ball Ferry, which Rick and Paulette will be travelling on this morning, is right in the downtown area of Victoria. It is a great ferry with friendly staff, but navigating the narrow downtown streets and possibly having to park ( yikes ) with a rig that is 50 feet long, can be problematic.  We hope to overnight in their parking/loading area and catch the morning ferry.  It is free, and so easy and handy except for one thing: you have to arrive exactly at 4:00 PM in order to enter their yard. You would think that would be easy, but not so with traffic on the Island. So, the other day we 'scouted' areas nearby to park in case we had to.

Today we are off to W*mart to pick up some pictures and maybe drop in on some friends.

rainy days

Typical for fall on the Island, but still depressing.  Tomorrow's weather forecast is for sun, and our plans are to visit the Black Ball Ferry office in downtown Victoria to see if we are still welcome to overnight in their parking lot prior to a morning ferry departure.

Our oldest son, Nathan, was in Vancouver for a Foo Fighters concert last night.  We offered to pick him up from the ferry terminal, rather than his wife and baby organize themselves to do so.  We were rewarded by a lovely delicious Chicken Fajita supper - thanks!

Our RV park is just great, with a half decent weekly rate.  I hope to get some pictures tomorrow if that weather forecast proves itself to be correct. Well, better that there be pictures of the park, rather than the laundry that I intend to be doing.

On the road - whoo hoo!

We left the North Shuswap on Sunday afternoon, spending a night with a dear friend in Kamloops.  Well, we had to pick up some coffee in Costco, too!

Yesterday we travelled over the Coquihalla highway to Vancouver, and yes, we hit a snowstorm at the high point.  Hopefully, that is the first and last snow we will see this winter.  It was still early afternoon, and the weather was pleasant in the city, so we kept on going to the ferry and managed to hit the 3:00 pm crossing.  Sunny skies, calm ocean.... you have to like that.

We are parked on the Island for 3 weeks, visiting our kids, the new grandbaby, and his Christening on November 13th.

Our 5th wheel is getting some work done here - the electric switch on the hot water tank is not working.  Our overhead interior ceiling lights have been burning out quickly and we need them looked at ( again ).  Hopefully these are all minor easy items, and then we will be ready for the big trip south.

All the storage items have been moved from our rented storage locker, and we have made a trip to the dump of the small bit of construction refuse and household garbage.  Don has now washed out the back of the truck and tomorrow the fifth wheel hitch goes back in - whoo hoo!

countdown is on....

Today, our little building was finished by our builder.  We have some more painting to do next spring and a deck to build on the front of it, but we are extremely pleased with how it turned out.  It is the 'bees knees' of a storage building.

The rest of the week we will be cleaning up the construction mess, a trip to the dump, recycle centre and moving items from our rented storage to this new blue ' doll house".  We hope to be ready after the weekend to get 'outta this popstand!

The nights have been very cool and yet, we still have roses growing and blooming.  It is wonderful.  Kim has cleaned up the gardens and the garden hoses have been disconnected.  We are looking forward to being on Vancouver Island, the pumpkin patch fields, and of course, to see our new little pumpkin!
